Sleeping Child Check Monitor Adapter - California

Sleeping Child Check® monitor adapter - California

The new Sleeping Child Check® monitor adapter enables current and new customers to be in full compliance with California State Bill 1072, also known as the Paul Lee School Bus Safety Law.  The law requires all buses in the state to be equipped with a child safety alert system like the Doran Sleeping Child Check® monitor and includes additional specifications related to using vehicle speed and timing mechanisms to activate the alarm.

The Doran Sleeping Child Check® monitor adapter can be easily installed as an addition to an existing Doran OEM or aftermarket monitor. It can also be installed as part of an aftermarket Doran Sleeping Child Check® monitoring system package for buses without a previously installed system. A specific wiring harness for different bus types is required.

How It Works

The Doran Sleeping Child Check® monitor and California adapter utilizes the following sequence of operation:

  1. Ignition on:
    1. System powers up; the three (3) minute timer in the adapter begins and vehicle speed is monitored through connection to the J1939 CAN bus on the vehicle
  2. System will be in ARMED mode when:
      • Three (3) minutes have elapsed, or
      • Vehicle reaches a speed of ten (10) miles per hour
    • For passenger assist and unloading, the system shall remain ARMED and not activate alarms when:
      • the ignition switch is turned to the Accessory position for unloading, or
      • the ignition switch is turned off and the stop arm is activated
  3. Disarming procedure: After a route is completed, proper disarming of the Sleeping Child Check® monitoring system occurs in two (2) steps:
    1. driver turns ignition off with all floor level doors closed (dependent on bus manufacturer's door wiring configuration), and
    2. driver walks to the rear of the bus (while looking for passengers) and depresses the DISARM button within in one (1) minute of ignition being turned off
    3. dome lights will flash and remain on for 60 seconds to confirm the system was deactivated
  4. Alarm condition: the horn will sound and lights will flash if:
    1. disarming the system does not occur within one minute of ignition, or
    2. a door is opened prior to properly disarming the Sleeping Child Check® monitoring system
  5. Deactivating a triggered alarm:
    1. verify all floor level doors are closed, and
    2. depress the DISARM button
